I wish the JWQ could be in the same place each year - it would be so much easier for planning. Fond du Lac was a lot less expensive than travelling out to the East Coast. I wonder if they will host it again. Colonial is hosting Easterns so I doubt they would do it.

But it may have been less expensive for you, but I'm sure it was quite the expense for the east coast teams. They probably want to rotate it between the sections. |

I wish that Junior and Senior Worlds could be held at the same time/same place. THAT would be cheaper--judges would already be there, and so would the fans. It would double the duration of the competition, but it's not a long time--from 2-4 days, and possibly less if the competition were organized differently.
This would give our Junior teams time to prepare adequately instead of having to come home from Nationals, get a few hours sleep, do a couple of practices, and then hop on a plane--no wonder the U.S. has trouble winning medals at JW--exhausation. It would be even better if the ISU would eliminate the unnecessary two programs and go to ONE go-for-it-all program. The Short Program is a carryover from Singles skating, and it actually was an attempt to make it easier for Singles skaters who did not excel in figures to still win the competition and please the fans. I personally believe that one reason it was implemented was to give the sport more television time (school figures were never shown on Wide World of Sports, but the Technical, or Short program, was a dream for television). It's time we got rid of it--it doesn't make any sense with IJS, as now we have two technical programs, one short, one long. Expensive for many countries and clubs--I believe we would see a HUGE increase in the number of Junior and Senior teams if the Technical Program were eliminated. And with one program, holding Junior and Senior Worlds at the same time would be a piece of cake. JMOs. -------------------- You aren't finished when you lose. You're finished when you quit.

True we bussed but the hotels, eating out and practice ice especially was A LOT less expensive than the east coast. It's tough to budget at this time of year not knowing where you have to travel. A combo Jr/Sr worlds would be good and then we wouldn't even need a JWQ. If the WCCJ was held later on it's own it would allow the US to send the Nationals top two as well. How do Finland and Canada determine who goes to WCCJ? If I'm not mistaken, Finnish nationals are around the same time as ours. |

Canada has a World Qualifier around the same time as the US does, held at Winterfest (the biggest Canadian invitational). To make sure that a bad first skate won't seriously hurt a team's chances of qualifying, teams skate 2 long programs. The first long score is cut in half, then they compete the short and then the long again.
Finland has two qualifying competitions in November and December, where only the placements matter. The 2nd qualifier is worth more than the first one. Both Finland and Canada also have their Nationals around the same time as the US (this year Finland was the same weekend and Canada was the week before). Last year one of the Canadian teams went from British Columbia, 1 day at home and then flew to Rouen and the other didn't compete at Nationals (and got a bye for a spot on the National Team). -------------------- SB's Most Likely to watch Luge or something equally obscure... |

True we bussed but the hotels, eating out and practice ice especially was A LOT less expensive than the east coast. There is no denying that the hotel prices vary widely across the United States (and the world, for that matter). But, the cost of practice ice and meals is pretty consistent IMO. If you think you are spending too much on food, it is time to get creative... plan to send parents out for hot cereal, cold cereal, milk/yogurt and fruit for the morning. Assign someone to pack a toaster oven for the trip, so that the skaters can have warm bagels.... There are inexpensive restaurants in just about every town. You just have to do your homework and find them. (Six degrees of separation... you can find someone who is familiar with the area.) |

We eat out as little as possible.
Agree to disagree I guess but practice ice costs DO(as well as hotels and admissions) vary widely between competitions depending on what the LOC is being charged per hour. Kalamazoo, Maplewood, Fond du Lac and Tri States are very reasonable. Mid Am was $125 for 15 minutes. Ice time on the coasts is also very costly. Things are just less expensive in the center of the country and often it can offset some of the other expenses JMO. |

Interesting perspective, as usual, but I can't follow how it would increase the number of Junior/Senior teams at all, let alone a HUGE increase. I really can't imagine we have a lot of Junior/Senior quality skaters and coaches out there who are not skating/coaching at that level because they have to perform a short program. |

Any word on the JWQ? In another thread it mentioned that it would be a part of the Colonial Classic. Any other rumors floating around?
