Senior Tryouts

IllinoiSkating is excited to announce the formation of a Senior team for the 2010 – 2011 season. We will be hosting tryouts for the Senior team on Sunday May 2nd, 2010. These tryouts will be open to incoming freshman who have been accepted to the University as well as returning skaters. Skaters must have passed their Novice moves to be eligible for the team.

To register for tryouts, please contact Head Coach Audrey Kamm at audrey.kamm@gmail.com. As tryouts approach, Audrey will be contacting all participants with a list of skills that will be included in tryouts, along with the specific itinerary for the day.

We encourage skaters who are currently waitlisted at Illinois to register as well (tryout fee will be refunded fully in the event that admissions is denied).

Upcoming Team Excel tryouts

Preliminary and Collegiate tryouts are on April 17th and 24th

Limited roster openings on Juvenile, Novice and Junior teams

As Team Excel kicks off the 2010-2011 skating year, we are pleased to offer additional tryouts in the spring. In addition to the previously announced tryouts for Preliminary and Collegiate teams on April 17th and 24th at The Skating Club of Boston in Brighton, MA, we are offering interested skaters an opportunity to skate with our Juvenile, Novice and Junior teams. We would like to welcome skaters to tryout for the limited number of open roster spots on each of these teams. If interested, please send email to excelsynchro@gmail.com.

The tryout process will include a skater evaluation period, allowing new skaters to experience aspects of Team Excel's training activities while also providing the coaches with an assessment of each skater's abilities.Skaters will be asked to demonstrate skills, including Moves in the Field, Freestyle, and Dance elements. Merita and her staff will evaluate strength, flow, speed, stamina, power, posture, and the ability to project "presentation." Specific skills are detailed in the two-page flyer.

At each session, experienced skaters will instruct new skaters in footwork and step sequences. In addition to the specific skating skills mentioned, Merita will evaluate skaters' ability to learn quickly, their sense of music, and the extent to which they interact and blend with other skaters.

Team Excel features an experienced coaching staff led by Director Merita Mullen, Coach of National Medal Winning and US World Teams, a dedicated and committed group of parent and skater volunteers and an affiliation with The Skating Club of Boston, one of the premier figure skating clubs in the United States. The Skating Club of Boston provides practice facilities in Brighton and Marlborough.

Team Excel offers skaters of all ages and levels an opportunity to have fun, develop skating skills, grow as individuals and develop a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence that comes with working towards goals and achieving them.

Just a reminder that tryouts for Precisely Right Synchronized Skating Teams are this week! Tryouts for Pre-juvenile, Juvenile, Intermediate, and Novice are this Tuesday, May 4th. On Wednesday, May 5th, we will be holding tryouts for Beginner and Preliminary. The week will conclude with tryouts for the Junior line on Thursday, May 6th. UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS SYNCHRONIZED SKATING TEAM BRINGS ON NEW COACH


Former Team USA World Free Skate Bronze Medalist Shawna Ludy a wonderful addition to the U of I coaching staff

04/05/10 - The University of Illinois Synchronized Skating organization is proud to announce the newest member their coaching staff, Shawna Ludy. Shawna will be the Assistant Coach of IllinoiSkating’s newly formed Senior Team with Head Coach Audrey Kamm. She has also been named the new Head Coach and Choreographer of the IllinoiSkating Collegiate Team.

Shawna is originally from Peoria, Illinois. She has earned her USFS gold medals in both Moves in the Field and Freestyle and passed Freestyle 9 through the ISI. From 2004 – 2008, she was a member of the Haydenettes, one of the largest names in US Synchronized Skating. While skating for the Haydenettes, Shawna was co-captain for 2 seasons, earned 3 National Championship titles and the World Bronze medal in the Free Skate in 2008. She coached the Mini Mates Juvenile Team for 2 seasons. Most recently, Shawna was the conditioning Coach for the Hayden organization and the Head Coach for the University of New Hampshire Collegiate Team.

IllinoiSkating is pleased to welcome such a highly qualified coach and skater into their organization. “We have a big season ahead of us,” said Kati Przybylski, IllinoiSkating president. “And with two former Team USA skaters, a Miami grad and Hayden alum, as our coaching staff, I believe IllinoiSkating will be contenders in both the Collegiate and Senior divisions. Shawna and Audrey have great ideas and a vision that will propel IllinoiSkating into the future of this sport.”
